WARSAW: Polish Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said on Monday that the security services of the country have neutralised a sabotage operation orchestrated by Russia and Belarus with the objective of destabilising Poland.
Warsaw has repeatedly blamed Moscow for attempting to destabilise Poland because of its role in supplying military assistance to Ukraine, accusations Russia has dismissed.
The PM went on to say saboteurs, operating from Belarus with the cooperation of Russia, penetrated local and central government institutions, including state-owned companies responsible for implementing military deals.
“The Belarusian and Russian foreign services… had a specific goal – to extort information, to blackmail individuals and institutions and to wage a cyberwar,” said Gawkowski, who is also minister for digital affairs.
He added the operational goal, to steal confidential Polish had been thwarted. Gawkowski said cyberattacks have doubled since last year, targeting Polish institutions and organisations, including logistics companies.
Gawkowski, who in June said Poland had blocked several cyberattacks on its critical infrastructure said in cyberspace, dangers come every hour, every minute.
Poland has also linked incidents of sabotage and arson on its soil to Russia adding that Russian secret services are trying actively to collect information on weapons deliveries to Ukraine after the war started in February 2022.
