WARSAW: On December 22, a significant step was taken in fortifying Poland’s defence capabilities as the PGZ-Amunicja consortium and the Polish Armament Agency signed an executive agreement. This marks the first tangible move within the framework contract, inked on June 1, for the procurement of up to one million shells of diverse types and calibers by 2029, with a contract value reaching almost PLN 11 billion.
Scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2029, nearly 300,000 155 mm artillery shells are earmarked for the Polish army. This agreement aligns with the broader National Munitions Reserve program, initiated in March 2013, aiming to ensure timely replenishment of large-caliber artillery shells for the Polish Armed Forces.
Under this program, emphasis is placed on creating and sustaining production capacities within the Polish arms industry. The goal is not only to meet domestic demand but also to establish a surplus production capacity for potential exports, primarily to NATO countries.
The PGZ-Amunicja consortium, responsible for jointly producing ammunition for the Polish army, comprises key entities such as Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa SA, Zakłady Metalowe Dezamet S.A., Mesko S.A., Zakłady Chemiczne Nitro-Chem S.A., Zakład Produkcji Specjalnej Gamrat, and Bydgoskie Zakłady Elektromechaniczne Belma S.A.
This strategic move not only bolsters Poland’s defence capabilities but also positions the country as a potential contributor to NATO’s munitions needs.
