ISLAMABAD: Amid a constitutional and political crisis in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on the judiciary to become the protector of the Constitution.
Speaking at the launch ceremony of the 1973 Constitution mobile application, the premier urged state institutions to unite in upholding the Constitution and keeping the national interest supreme.
The prime minister criticized the recent stay order issued by the court against a legislation that was still in the making, stating that it was not common practice around the world. Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the Constitution had its roots in parliament, and the judiciary could only interpret the law, not rewrite it.
He highlighted that the Constitution of 1973 was the result of the politicians’ hard work, who arrived at a consensus in formulating the sacred document to run the country. The Prime Minister recalled the efforts of veteran politicians including former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Khan Abdul Wali Khan, and Mufti Mehmood, who set aside their political differences to write a constitution that acted as a binding force for the federation.
PM Shehbaz vows to protect Constitution
While acknowledging the mistakes made by politicians in the past, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need to rectify them and take Pakistan out of its current challenges. He assured that his government would not hesitate to protect the state and the Constitution, despite the difficult circumstances.
The prime minister also praised the decision to include the 1973 Constitution in the syllabus of schools and colleges, stating that it would raise awareness about its sanctity. He expressed the hope that the young generation would learn about the Constitution and engage in healthy academic debates.
The mobile application, developed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in collaboration with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), aims to raise awareness among the general public about the 1973 Constitution. It has been launched on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the country’s Constitution.
The prime minister’s call for unity in upholding the Constitution and protecting the national interest comes at a crucial time for Pakistan, with many challenges facing the country’s governance and political stability.
