KARACHI: Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif, on Thursday inaugurated the third unit of Karachi nuclear power plant (K-3) jointly constructed with the assistance from China.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the prime minister said that with K3, Karachi’s nuclear power production would increase to 2,200 Megawatts. He said the new power plant unit would generate 1,100MW of electricity at a discounted rate. He said Pakistan’s total hydel capacity was 60,000MW.

The prime minister expressed the desire to enhance cooperation with China on further projects.
CPEC helping generate thousands of megawatts: PM
PM Sharif said China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was helping produce thousands of megawatts of electricity in Pakistan.

He hoped the two countries would further the development of CPEC projects.
He said Thar’s coal could assist Pakistan’s progress for years, adding that switching to coal for power production can save billions of dollars.

With the introduction of K-3 into Pakistan’s national grid, the share of nuclear power in the country’s energy mix will exceed to 10 percent, according to a press release.
