NEW YORK CITY: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
According to a press release issued from the Prime Minister House in Islamabad, Shehbaz Sharif, during the meeting, expressed appreciation for the successful Staff Level Agreement (SLA) for a 37-month, USD 7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Pakistan.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing structural reforms and fostering private sector development.
Sharif also acknowledged the IMF’s technical assistance and capacity-building programs, which have bolstered the country’s institutions and improved economic management.
Georgieva reiterated the Fund’s support for Pakistan’s initiatives, highlighting the importance of maintaining macroeconomic stability and promoting inclusive, sustainable growth.
The discussion also addressed the urgent need to mobilize adaptation financing for climate change. The Prime Minister agreed to have the Finance Minister raise this critical issue with senior IMF management during the Annual Meetings in October.
Both leaders committed to strengthening cooperation between the Pakistani government and the IMF to promote economic stability and growth.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who is on 5-day official visit to the United States to Address the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly has so far met with several world leaders. Among them are Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh Professor Muhammad Yunus, Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and Bill Gates, and United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres.
