ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed his deep condolences over the death of former Chinese president Jiang Zemin.

Jiang Zemin, who came to power after the bloody 1989 crackdown on protestors in and around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, died of leukemia and multiple organ failure. He was 96.

PM Shehbaz, “I extend my profound condolences on the sad demise of former President of China, Jiang Zemin. The late president was a wise leader and a statesman. In Pakistan, we fondly remember him as a great friend who made valuable contributions to strengthening Pakistan-China relations,” the prime minister said in his condolence message posted on his Twitter handle.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist Party said that Zemin, who died of leukemia and multiple organ failure, was recognized as an outstanding leader with high prestige” and “a long-tested Communist fighter”.
