ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar is set to embark on an official visit to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he will participate in the upcoming World Climate Action Summit as part of the UN Climate Change Conference COP28.
The summit is scheduled to commence on the 1st of next month.
Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, during her weekly news briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, revealed that the Foreign Minister and the Minister for Climate Change will accompany the Prime Minister as part of the delegation. The Prime Minister’s program in Dubai encompasses participation in high-level events at the Summit and bilateral meetings with counterparts from participating countries.
Prime Minister Kakar is expected to articulate Pakistan’s vision for addressing climate change, emphasizing the need for implementing shared climate commitments in areas such as mitigation, adaptation, climate finance, and the loss and damage fund. At COP28, Pakistan aims to collaborate with other developing countries, urging the operationalization of the loss and damage fund for climate-vulnerable nations.
The spokesperson highlighted that Pakistan will reiterate its call to developed countries, urging them to urgently and fully deliver on the long-overdue goal of mobilizing one hundred billion dollars per year as climate finance for developing countries.
In addition to the climate-focused agenda, Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani is set to visit Belgium to attend the International Conference on the Global Alliance to Counter Migrant Smuggling on the 28th of this month.
The spokesperson emphasized Pakistan’s support for an international peace conference on the Palestinian question, stating that regional peace can only be achieved through the implementation of relevant UN resolutions. These resolutions call for a two-state solution, resulting in a viable, sovereign, and geographically-contiguous Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
