UNITED NATIONS: Anwaarul Haq Kakar, the interim prime minister of Pakistan, intends to attend the UNGA’s 78th session, which begins on September 5, according to media reports.

If the trip goes as planned, Kakar will reportedly be the first interim prime minister to represent Pakistan at the UN General Assembly. According to a press release from the UN, the high-level general debate featuring speeches from world leaders began on September 19th. Pakistan has reserved a spot in the high-level discussion, according to Pakistani diplomats at the UN, who added that they “are awaiting further instructions from Islamabad.”

After Pakistan and Panama sponsored the resolution, the UN General Assembly declared January 26 the International Day of Clean Energy earlier this week. The draft, approved without a vote, reaffirmed the 193-member Assembly’s dedication to environmental protection. The 26th of January will serve as a platform for raising awareness of the need to use energy resources sustainably and improving international cooperation to support the global energy transition.

The theme of the 78th session of the General Assembly will be “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress, and Sustainability for All,” according to UNGA 78 President-elect Dennis Francis in a letter to member states.

The primary decision-making body of the UN is the General Assembly. It offers a singular platform for multilateral discussion of the entire range of international issues covered by the United Nations Charter because it comprises all member nations. Every one of the 193 United Nations members has an equal vote. The UNGA also elects the non-permanent members of the Security Council and approves the UN budget, among other important decisions for the UN. The UNGA appoints the Secretary-General on the proposal of the Security Council.

Regular sessions of the assembly take place every year from September to December. It examines specific concerns and adopts resolutions through dedicated agenda items or sub-items.
