SANNA: The first commercial flight from Yemen’s capital to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) since 2016 took off carrying pilgrims on Saturday.

Officials told AFP that a plane carrying 277 travelers departed at around 8 pm seven years after Sanaa’s airport was blockaded due to conflict in the country.

Mohammad Askar, a Hajj pilgrim said that they were very excited and happy after the recent development. Local officials in Yemen said that two more flights will leave Sanaa on Monday and Tuesday.

A Saudi delegation also flew to the capital of Yemen in April, the same week as a major prisoner exchange that released about 900 detainees in a confidence-building measure (CBM).

Meanwhile, Yemeni government officials and Houthi delegations met in Amman on Saturday for the second day of a fresh round of prisoner exchange talks, raising hopes for the release of hundreds of prisoners. The talks, sponsored by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN, started on Friday and are likely to emphasize on securing a deal to exchange hundreds of prisoners in the upcoming days.
