KABUL: A group consisting of journalists, activists, academics, and concerned individuals has launched a petition calling for Twitter to ban the Taliban and its affiliates, including the Haqqani Network, from using the platform. The signatories are urging Twitter to take immediate action to address what they see as the misuse of the platform.

The petition highlights a recent UN report that exposed the Taliban’s connections with global terror networks and various regional terrorist groups. It emphasizes the need to curb the dissemination of violent ideologies, recruitment efforts, and the incitement of hate speech and terrorism through Twitter.

Death Threats via Twitter

Specifically, the petition refers to an incident involving Saeed Khosty, a former spokesperson for the Taliban’s interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, where Khosty allegedly issued death threats to Taliban opponents via Twitter.

The petition emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the well-being and security of individuals. The signatories eagerly await a positive response from Twitter regarding their request.

It is worth noting that members of the Taliban have previously praised Twitter for providing a platform for “freedom of speech.” Anas Haqqani, a key member of the Taliban, recently tweeted about the advantages of Twitter, including freedom of speech and the platform’s public nature and credibility.
