LIMA, PERU: Peru’s parliament began on Wednesday once again holding discussion on a bill to advance polls from April 2024 to the end of the current year in an attempt to calm the political unrest that has left dozens of people dead in recent weeks.

Local media reports said that left-wing President Dina Boluarte is behind efforts to advance the polls but her main support comes from the country’s opposition.

Dina Boluarte’s resignation and elections are main demands by the protest demonstrators that have kept up pressure on the current government since December 7, when ex-president Pedro Castillo was impeached and then arrested. The protestors also demanded that the country’s Congress should be dissolved and a new parliament should rewrite the constitution.

Last week, lawmakers voted against advancing polls and a fresh debate, which began on Monday, has pulled on for three days now.

Parliament president Jose Williams tweeted, “Today, parliament will take a significant decision faced with the political crisis,”. He said that the debate will last 3 hours, saying that a vote would take place at 2000 GMT.

Right-wing MP Hernando Guerra García said his party had suggested the advance because their country is bleeding. Reports said that as many as 48 people were killed in clashes between protesters and security forces since December 7.
