PESHAWAR: Residents of Peshawar, on their 2nd day of protest against the high electricity bills, blocked the main circular road, causing difficulties and huge traffic jams on both sides.

The protesters came from different inner-city localities and gathered near Gunj Gate on the main Circular Road. They were chanting slogans against PESCO and other concerned departments for sending heavy bills. They demanded the government set up an investigation committee to determine the actual riding of the electricity bills. While recording their protest, they also burned their electricity bills.

Demonstrators said, “It is unfair on the part of the concerned departments to send electricity bills of thousands and millions of rupees to even impoverished families, which is a gross cruelty.”

They said that in addition to raising the price of electricity, the government had also increased unjustified taxes on consumers’ bills.

“Public patience has run out; we sell our valuables and home goods to pay the bills. People are being provoked and forced to commit suicide,” one of the protesters said. —APP
