DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has rejected the possibility of negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, despite the directives issued by the Supreme Court a day earlier.
The apex court had directed the ruling and opposition political parties to create a consensus on the date of elections and update the three-member bench by 4 pm. However, the head of the ruling coalition party held the presser by 4:30 pm, missing the court’s deadline.
Speaking at a press conference, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) leader said: “Inshallah there will be no need for any negotiations [with Imran Khan].” PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry had confirmed that the coalition alliance had not yet contacted the Imran Khan-led party for talks.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that they want Imran Khan out of politics, but the Supreme Court wants him at the center.
He also had a telephonic conversation with the PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N head Nawaz Sharif, who informed him that the court wants them to talk to Imran Khan and decide a date for elections.
PDM chief asks Supreme Court to clarify its position
The JUI-F chief asked the court to clarify its position and under which section of the constitution everyone will agree on the election date given by Imran Khan.
He added that Imran Khan should be disqualified instead. He further maintained that they considered this process apolitical, and the court should respect the parliament.
He lambasted the Supreme Court, saying that the parliament is supreme, and if the judges can summon politicians to the court, why can’t the parliament summon judges?
Earlier today, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) assured the Supreme Court that they would sit with the PTI and try to find a solution on the election date.
The opposition parties have been protesting against the government for months, calling for fresh elections and accusing the ruling party of rigging the 2018 general elections.
The PDM, an alliance of opposition parties, had launched a nationwide protest campaign against the government, demanding fresh elections. However, the government has rejected their demands and accused the opposition of trying to destabilize the country.
