LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a significant reorganization in its national selection committee, revealing a new seven-member structure devoid of a chairman position. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi made the announcement during a press conference held in Lahore on Sunday, outlining the revamped committee’s structure and responsibilities.
Naqvi emphasized that all seven members of the selection committee will hold equal powers, ensuring that decisions are made collectively with majority backing. The selection committee, formed after careful consideration of various factors, comprises four former cricketers: Mohammad Yousuf, Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq, and Asad Shafiq. Additionally, the head coach, team captain, and an analyst will serve as the other three members.
While Naqvi noted the inclusion of two to three coordinators, he clarified that they will not possess voting powers within the committee. This move aims to democratize the decision-making process and distribute responsibility among key stakeholders within the cricketing management.
“This committee will be the driving force behind every decision moving forward. They are integral members of our management team, and I am confident that their collective efforts will yield positive outcomes,” remarked the PCB chairman.
Naqvi further disclosed that the same selection committee will oversee the Under 19 cricket team, ensuring consistency and coherence in talent identification and development across different levels.
Regarding the team’s coaching staff, Naqvi revealed that the PCB is in the final stages of gathering a comprehensive panel of national and international coaches. He assured that the selection process will be completed within four to five days, ensuring the appointment of qualified persons to guide Pakistan’s cricketing endeavors.
Naqvi announced the restoration of Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf’s central contract. Rauf’s contract had been under review following an injury setback and an appeal process initiated by the player. Naqvi assured that Rauf’s injury recovery expenses will be covered by insurance, emphasizing the PCB’s commitment to supporting its star players.
The chairman also addressed speculation surrounding the team’s captaincy, affirming that the selection committee will deliberate on the matter. Whether Shaheen Shah Afridi retains his captaincy or a new skipper is appointed will be determined through thorough discussions within the committee.
Naqvi expressed optimism about the Champions Trophy 2024, hoping that it proceeds as scheduled. He revealed that an International Cricket Council (ICC) delegation is set to visit Pakistan to evaluate the tournament arrangements, underscoring the country’s readiness to host international cricket events.
Naqvi commented on all-rounder Imad Wasim’s return to international cricket after withdrawing his retirement. He stated that Wasim’s comeback aligns with the team’s preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup, emphasizing the importance of fielding a strong squad for the tournament.
