RIYADH: People across the Saudi Arabia will be able to see a partial lunar eclipse on Saturday night, Arab media reported on Friday citing Jeddah Astronomy Society.

According to the society’s president, Majid Abu Zahra, the eclipse would be seen from all parts of the country as the moon began entering the Earth’s shadow at 10:35 p.m.

He said the eclipse will be seen in Saudi Arabia, the Arab world and most parts of Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

He added the partial eclipse phase will last for an hour and 17 minutes between 10:35 p.m. and 11:52 p.m. the Saudi time.

Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon and stops sunlight from reaching on the moon. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and sun are completely blocked by the earth while a partial eclipse happens when only part of Earth’s shadow covers the moon.

Abu Zahra said this will be the last eclipse of the year and its peak time would be about 11:14 p.m.

A lunar eclipse, unlike a solar eclipse, can be viewed with the naked eye, without the need for safety measures.
