PARIS: The regional transport authority has announced a significant increase in metro ticket prices to help manage the added costs associated with running urban transport services to accommodate millions of additional visitors during the Games.

According to the latest announcement, the price of single metro tickets will nearly double during the Olympics, rising from the current 2.10 euros to 4 euros. Similarly, 10-ticket blocks, a popular choice among regular commuters, will experience a substantial increase, jumping from 16.90 euros to 32 euros.

Valerie Pecresse, the head of the Paris region’s transport authority, addressed the price adjustments in a video posted on social media, emphasizing that the annual and monthly travel passes for residents would remain unaffected by the price hikes. Pecresse made it clear that it is essential to ensure that Parisian residents are not burdened with the additional costs brought about by hosting the Olympic Games, estimated at around 200 million euros.

The surge in ticket prices is a response to the anticipated influx of approximately 10 million visitors during the Olympic and Paralympic Games scheduled to begin in July. The increased demand for transport services during this period necessitates additional operational resources.

To cater to the needs of tourists, a special flat-rate pass will be available at a cost of 16 euros per day or 70 euros per week during the Games. This pass will cover travel within Paris and its surrounding region, including transportation to the Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports.

To mitigate the impact on local residents, Pecresse advised Parisians to stock up on metro tickets before the price surge takes effect in July. The elevated ticket prices will be in place from July 20 to September 8, aligning with the period of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As the city gears up to host this global event, the adjustments in metro ticket pricing reflect the authorities’ efforts to balance the increased operational demands with fair considerations for both residents and visitors during this exciting and bustling time in Paris.
