WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden declared on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin, considered a “pariah,” is “losing” the war in Ukraine. However, Biden maintained that it is too early to determine whether Putin has been weakened by the recent rebellion of the mercenary Wagner group.

During a press conference at the White House, Biden was asked by reporters if Putin’s position has been compromised. In response, Biden stated, “It’s hard to tell, but he’s clearly losing the war” in Ukraine, and he added that Putin is also “losing the war at home.” Biden emphasized that Putin is now perceived as “a pariah around the world.”

Western Support for Ukraine

While the White House remains cautious in interpreting the consequences of the recent events in Russia, where the Wagner group—a highly capable faction of the Russian military active in Ukraine—mutinied and threatened an attack on Moscow before retracting their actions.

Biden has taken the lead in rallying Western support for Ukraine’s resistance against the Russian invasion, which was initiated in February of the previous year.
