JENIN: A 20-year-old Palestinian, Ezzedin Kanan, has tragically passed away due to wounds sustained during an Israeli army raid in the occupied West Bank. The news of Kanan’s death has further amplified the deep-seated grief and tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict in the region.
Kanan, a resident of Jaba near Jenin, was shot in the head on July 3 during one of the most intense Israeli military operations witnessed in the West Bank in recent times. The raid, lasting two days, included airstrikes, the deployment of ground troops, and the use of bulldozers to raze roads and structures. Tragically, Kanan’s passing brings the death toll from the raid to 14.
The Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, an offshoot of the secular nationalist Fatah party, claimed Kanan as one of their “fiercest fighters” and pledged to avenge his loss. Armed and masked militants accompanied the mourning procession for Kanan, flanking his body as it was carried through his hometown of Jaba. His body, draped in a Palestinian flag and adorned with a headband from the group, was an emotional symbol of the deep-rooted emotions and commitment to the cause.
Israeli Army Maintains Operation Inflicted Damage to Militant Groups
The Israeli army maintained that the operation had inflicted significant damage on militant groups in the Jenin refugee camp. They asserted that thousands of weapons, bomb-making materials, and caches of money had been confiscated during the raid. However, the situation has ignited further contention and emotions, exposing the complex dynamics underlying the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The heightened violence in the West Bank has reached levels not seen in nearly two decades, with over 170 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire since the start of 2023, according to a tally by The Associated Press. This ongoing cycle of violence underscores the underlying tensions fueled by a history of occupation, lack of political progress, and the absence of a clear path toward resolution.
