AMMAN: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has warned against Israel’s plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, describing such moves as a serious violation of international law that threatens the prospects for peace and the two-state solution.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman on Monday.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called upon US President Donald Trump to reaffirm America’s firm commitments to safeguard the Palestinian people from displacement and to uphold international law by opposing any annexation of Palestinian lands, the Wafa news agency reported.
In a unified and principled stance, President Abbas and King Abdullah II strongly condemned recent Israeli measures designed to illegally deepen the annexation of the West Bank, expand settlements, and severely impact the status of the city of Hebron and the revered Ibrahimi Mosque.
President Abbas cautioned against the grave risks these actions pose to regional security and stability, highlighting the particular danger of escalation at Jerusalem’s sacred Islamic and Christian holy sites during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
He stressed the urgent need to implement the second phase of the US plan to end the war in Gaza—a critical step forward that includes the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces. Furthermore, he resolutely affirmed the indivisible unity of all Palestinian territories, encompassing Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and East Jerusalem, as the essential foundation for a just and lasting peace.
King Abdullah in his remarks, reiterated Jordan’s support for Palestinian rights, including the establishment of an independent state.
Israel’s security cabinet approved a series of measures on Sunday designed to simplify land purchases by settlers in the West Bank and strengthen enforcement capabilities for Israeli authorities.
