JERUSALEM: Khader Adnan, a member of the militant Palestinian organisation Islamic Jihad, died on Tuesday in an Israeli prison following an 87-day hunger strike, according to Israeli jail officials

Israel claimed that Adnan “refused to have medical tests and receive medical assistance” and “was found unresponsive in his cell” early on Tuesday morning.

In response, the WAED Prisoners Association in Gaza told Reuters that Khader Adnan had been killed in cold blood.

Adnan, 45, was a well-known Islamic Jihad figure in the West Bank, which Israel conquered in a battle in 1967. He was originally from the city of Jenin, which is still under occupation. Islamic Jihad supports the eradication of Israel and rejects peace agreements between the Palestinians and Israel, much like the Islamist Hamas.

Israel charged Adnan with inciting, promoting terrorism, and membership in a terrorist organisation. Since 2004, he had been detained on and off and had participated in five hunger strikes.
