ISLAMABAD: The husband of a Palestinian doctor in the Gaza Strip whose children were killed in an Israeli attack on Friday remains in critical condition, BBC reported.

Hamdi al-Najjar’s “life remains in danger”, BBC cited Dr Milena Angelova-Chee, a Bulgarian doctor working at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis as saying.

An Israeli attack killed nine of the couple’s 10 children on Friday and left him and the couple’s 11-year-old son injured.

Earlier, DW cited Gaza’s civil defense agency as saying an Israeli strike in the southern city of Khan Younis on Friday killed nine of the 10 children of a married doctor couple.

Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal said Saturday that civil defense “crews transported the bodies of nine child martyrs, some of them charred, from the home of Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar and his wife, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, all of whom were their children.”

According to the Associated Press, Ahmad al-Farra, head of the hospital’s pediatrics department said that Alaa al-Najjar, a pediatrician at Nasser Hospital, was on duty when she ran home and found her family’s house on fire.

“Significant injuries”

Hamdi al-Najjar – a doctor like his wife – sustained significant injuries to his brain, lungs, right arm, and kidney in Saturday’s attack, Dr Angelova-Chee said. BBC reported that the hospital is “doing everything we can for him”, she added.

The couple’s surviving son Adam was also injured. Dr Angelova-Chee said her colleagues had told her he was doing “reasonably well”.

The Red Cross meanwhile, said two of its staff were killed in a strike on their home in Khan Younis on Saturday.
