He added that because of the fear of the possible assault by Israel in Gaza, half of the population of the area has been forced to leave their homeland.

Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour talking to reporters said that Antonio Guterres needs to take more steps as whatever has been done is not sufficient to stop this crime against humanity.

Many countries on Friday asked Israel to hold off the plan to attack northern Gaza, where more than a million civilians largely confronted Israel’s order to leave the area before it goes after Hamas.

The UN said Israel’s military has asked the 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza to move to the enclave’s south within 24 hours.

Guterres in touch with Israeli authorities

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that Guterres was in touch with Israeli authorities, asking them to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.

He said no aid was reaching to the Gaza Strip adding that the UN’s own supplies have now hit the lowest level.

He stressed the need to ensure full support for opening humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip to prevent a further loss of civilian life.

Meanwhile Guterres told reporters that immediate humanitarian access throughout Gaza was needed, so that everyone can get fuel, food and water.

The ongoing Israeli military’s airstrikes have taken a devastating toll, with nearly 1,800 Gaza residents martyred, including over 580 children, in waves of missile strikes on the densely populated enclave. Tensions have escalated across the Middle East, triggering protests in support of the Palestinians.
