RAMALLAH: Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki has commended China’s recent plea before the International Court of Justice labelling Israel as a “foreign oppression occupying Palestine.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that China’s Foreign Ministry envoy Wang Kejian called on Riyad al-Maliki at the Palestinian Foreign Ministry headquarters in Ramallah.

During the meeting, Al-Maliki thanked China’s consistent support for the establishment of a Palestinian state and the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people. He specifically praised China’s oral argument presented at the International Court of Justice. Moreover, al-Maliki emphasized the significance of Chinese statements, applauded China’s aid and support to Palestinians, and highlighted China’s financial contributions to the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

During the meeting, al-Maliki stressed the importance of a sustainable ceasefire, particularly during Ramadan, and urged for international protection for Palestinian civilians as well as secure delivery of humanitarian aid.

China reiterates Support to Palestine

Wang Kejian reiterated China’s steadfast support for justice, peace, and international law. He reaffirmed China’s support for a two-state solution, cessation of hostilities, safety of civilians, facilitation of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and rejection of forced displacement.

China’s representation at the International Court of Justice on February 22 asserted the legitimacy of the Palestinians’ use of armed struggle for independence from foreign and colonial rule, citing international law. They stated that the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination includes the use of force against foreign oppression.

In a landmark move, Israel was ordered by the International Court of Justice in January to cease genocidal acts and ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza. This ruling underscores the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis and working towards a peaceful resolution to the longstanding conflict.
