ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s transport and communications sector continued to support economic activity during FY2026, with key indicators showing progress across highways, railways, ports, shipping and communication services, according to the latest Economic Survey.

The National Highway Authority’s network now spans 14,480 kilometres, providing a vital transport backbone for trade, industry and regional connectivity across the country. Officials say continued investment in road infrastructure is helping improve the movement of goods and people while supporting economic growth.

Pakistan Railways also recorded significant operational activity during the fiscal year. Passenger traffic reached 24.16 million passengers during the July-March period, reflecting the continued importance of rail transport for affordable travel. Freight operations also remained strong, with cargo movement reaching 4,839 million tonne-kilometres, highlighting the railway network’s role in supporting commerce and supply chains.

The maritime sector posted encouraging results as well. Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) Group reported a profit after tax of Rs7.5 billion during the period, demonstrating resilience amid challenging global shipping conditions.

Meanwhile, cargo handling at the country’s major ports — Karachi Port, Port Qasim and Gwadar Port — reached 78.45 million tonnes, underscoring the importance of maritime trade in supporting imports, exports and economic activity.

The communications sector also maintained a wide national footprint. Pakistan Post’s network stood at 9,695 outlets across the country, ensuring access to postal and related services in both urban and rural areas.

In the media sector, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) reported 142 licensed television channels, reflecting the continued expansion and diversity of the country’s broadcast industry.

Officials say the performance of the transport and communications sector highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen connectivity, improve logistics efficiency and support Pakistan’s broader economic development goals.
