ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa called for adopting eco-friendly practices and a healthy lifestyle to counter the climate-related challenges in the country. He was addressing a climate change conference hosted by the Supreme Court on Saturday.

The conference, titled “Navigating Climate Governance: Executive Action and Judicial Oversight,” was also addressed by the top court senior most judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, environmental experts, government officials, and other prominent speakers.

“Whenever we consult doctors, they advise us to leave smoking and do walk. A rise in the human body’s temperature indicates our illness but today, earth is also facing ailment like a fever as it is absorbing a lot of smoke into it,” said the top judge.

He emphasized the global issue of plastic production and the lack of effective disposal methods.

Encouraging a return to nature-centered living, CJP Isa stressed the importance of adopting a diet rich in vegetables and reducing reliance on meat consumption.

He also suggested promoting walking and cycling, citing the need to prioritize sustainable transportation methods like hybrid vehicles.

CJP Isa underscored the significance of conserving resources, such as electricity and food, to mitigate environmental degradation. He urged individuals to cultivate a deeper understanding of nature and instil values of environmental protection within their homes.

Despite Pakistan’s minimal contribution to global emissions, the country faces severe climate impacts, including floods, droughts, water scarcity, and extreme heat.

The National Drought Monitoring Centre (NDMC) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recently issued an advisory warning of a potential flash drought in heatwave-affected regions, emphasizing the need for preemptive measures in disaster-prone districts.
