ISLAMABAD: Naseer Soomro, one of the tallest men in the world, passed away on Monday in his hometown of Shikarpur after a prolonged illness. He was 55.
According to family sources, Soomro had been suffering from a chronic lung disease for several months and had been hospitalised multiple times due to severe breathing difficulties.
His brother, Riaz Soomro, confirmed his death, stating that he had been receiving treatment at home in recent weeks.
Soomro had been taken to Karachi for medical treatment on several occasions, and last year, he was admitted to a private hospital in the city.
After showing signs of recovery, he returned to his hometown, but his health continued to deteriorate in recent months.
His funeral prayers will be offered in Shikarpur on Tuesday morning.
Standing at an extraordinary height of 7 feet 9 inches, Soomro gained national and international recognition, bringing global attention to Pakistan.
His remarkable stature earned him widespread admiration, and in recognition of his status, he was offered a job by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), where he was employed for several years.
Soomro’s passing marks the loss of one of Pakistan’s most recognisable figures. Before him, Alam Channa was considered the tallest man in Pakistan, and after Channa’s death, Soomro gained prominence.
More recently, Zia Rashid from Multan, who stands at 8 feet tall, has been regarded as Pakistan’s tallest man.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed his condolences over Soomro’s demise, stating, “I offer my heartfelt sympathies to Naseer Soomro’s family. May he rest in peace, and may his loved ones find strength during this difficult time.”
Soomro had faced several health challenges over the years, including joint pain and respiratory issues.
