Pakistan’s Senate Passes Bill to Regulate Rallies, Public Gatherings in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that the government is actively addressing the spread of Mpox, with measures including enhanced airport screening and the availability of testing kits.

Responding to a calling attention notice in the Senate, he said five cases of Mpox have so far been reported in the country.

Earlier, the upper house of the Parliament passed four bills today including the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024 to regulate holding rallies and public meetings in Islamabad and ban public gatherings without prior permission.

The private member bill, moved by Senators Saleem Mandviwala, Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Irfanul Haque Siddiqui, Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari and Umer Farooq, mentions punishments for illegal assemblies.

The other bills include The Apostille Bill, 2024, The Privatization Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and The Establishment of Telecommunication Appellate Tribunal Bill, 2024.

Furthermore, the chair referred The Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority Bill, 2024 to the relevant Standing Committee. The Senate session was adjourned and will reconvene tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
