ISLAMABAD: The lawmaker of the ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Tuesday tabled ‘The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2024’ in the National Assembly.

The bill, moved by the MNA Daniyal Chaudhry, proposes increasing the total number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 23, including the Chief Justice.

The proposed amendment seeks to revise the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1997. Currently, the apex court has 16 judges in addition to the Chief Justice.

The government did not raise any objections to the bill. However, opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai criticized the bill and raised a concern about a quorum issue in the assembly.

The bill has been referred to the relevant standing committee for further consideration.

Earlier, on Monday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif hosted a dinner for parliamentarians from various political parties.

During the event, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for their support in government affairs and briefed them on key legislative matters.
