ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s ruling alliance is in the process of selecting a caretaker Prime Minister to oversee the upcoming parliamentary elections and address economic and security challenges in the country. Among the potential candidates, politician Muhammad Aslam Bhutani has emerged as a top contender for the position.
According to well-informed sources, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has recommended Bhutani for the caretaker prime minister’s post, and the main coalition party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is also seriously considering his name. Sources informed that a senior politician and PPP leader has also conveyed congratulations to Bhutani on being selected as caretaker premier.
Muhammad Aslam Bhutani is a Member of the National Assembly and entered politics in 2002. He was born in Dureji, a small village in the Lasbela district of Pakistan’s Balochistan province. He stepped into politics in 2002. If a politician is chosen as caretaker prime minister, Bhutani is likely to be selected for the role.
Pakistan’s Economic Challenges and Caretaker Setup
Alternatively, if the coalition alliance opts for a technocrat as caretaker prime minister, two prominent economists are being considered – Hafeez Ahmed Pasha and Abdul Hafeez Shaikh. Hafeez Ahmed Pasha is a former politician and economist who has served as the Federal Minister for Finance.
Abdul Hafeez Shaikh is also an economist and politician who has held various key roles in past governments.
The coalition and allied parties are expected to finalize the name for the caretaker prime minister in the coming days. It is crucial for political forces to cooperate with the government and focus on saving the economy to ensure the success of the IMF program. The presence of an expert economist in the new setup is deemed necessary to address the country’s economic challenges effectively.
The next IMF review is scheduled for November, and the successful completion of the program will be crucial for the country’s economic stability. The incoming caretaker government must make every effort to ensure the program’s success amid ongoing economic hardships in the country.
