LAHORE: The government in Pakistan’s Eastern Punjab has planned to export rice worth US $2 billion this year after meeting all legal necessities.
According to a press release issued by the provincial government on Thursday, rice worth US $2 billion would be exported during the current year.
Punjab exported rice worth $1 billion last year
Official sources said that last year, Punjab exported rice worth $1 billion, and compared to the last year, there would be 100 percent rise in rice exports.
Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi in a meeting said that in the next two years, Pakistan’s rice exports could reach US $5 billion.
He ordered to ensure the stability of cotton prices. Caretaker Punjab Minister for Trade and Punjab Agriculture Secretary would engage with the federal government in this regard.
The meeting also decided that the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) should be asked to start cotton purchases on an instant basis.
Also, initial production target of wheat had been set at 40 million tonnes in Punjab, said sources. About 1.9 million acres of land would be cultivated with oil crops in the province.
The caretaker CM approved the measures aimed at obtaining more yield of crops.
