LAHORE: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari urged the adoption of a comprehensive approach and sound financial policies to steer the country towards development.
Emphasizing the modernization of various sectors, particularly agriculture, he mentioned plans to implement agricultural income taxation in line with International Monetary Fund conditions.
However, he clarified that provincial governments would spearhead efforts to tax affluent farmers based on profitability and expenditures.
He was addressing at the Professor Waris Mir Memorial Seminar in Lahore on Tuesday, attended by journalists, academics, political activists, and members of civil society.
Speaking on the occasion, President Zardari acknowledged the media’s role in empowering the public but cautioned against recent trends of media polarization.
He highlighted concerns over external influences manipulating perceptions within Muslim societies, advocating for a vigilant approach against agenda-driven information.
Reflecting on personal and political challenges, President Zardari paid tribute to Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed’s dedication to democracy amidst adversities faced by the Pakistan People’s Party. He emphasized resilience in the face of trials, stressing the party’s enduring commitment to democratic principles despite historical pressures and attempts on their lives.
President Zardari also lauded the contributions of the late Professor Waris Mir to journalism and democracy, commending Faisal Mir and Hamid Mir for carrying forward their father’s legacy.
Senior journalist Hamid Mir, speaking at the event, called for an end to political victimization and urged adherence to the 1973 Constitution. Meanwhile, Sohail Warraich recognized Professor Waris Mir’s journalistic and democratic contributions, praising President Zardari’s role in promoting political reconciliation amid the country’s challenges.
