ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President, Dr. Arif Alvi, on Wednesday invited Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja for an urgent meeting regarding consultations on a date for the upcoming general elections.
In his letter, posted on the Presidency’s account on X, Arif Alvi stated that after the dissolution of the National Assembly on the advice of the then Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, the President is obliged to appoint a date not later than 90 days from the date of the dissolution for the holding elections of the general assembly.
The President invited the chief of the elections watchdog for a meeting today or tomorrow to set an appropriate date within the stipulated timeframe for general elections.
The letter said that Article 48 of the Constitution empowers the President to appoint a date for the general elections within 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly. Therefore, the letter stated that the Chief Election Commissioner is invited to the Aiwan-i-Sadr to hold a meeting with the President today or tomorrow to fix a date for the general elections.
President Dissolves National Assembly
It is pertinent to mention here that President Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of the then Prime Minister on August 9, three days before its mandated period ended on August 14.
