ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari urged for fair wheat pricing, timely interventions, and improved procurement processes to safeguard farmers’ interests.

Emphasizing support for farmers as crucial for enhancing wheat production, he addressed concerns over farmers receiving inadequate prices for their wheat crops and facing difficulties in accessing wheat procurement bags.

The president expressed these sentiments during a meeting focusing on wheat procurement issues, attended by Minister for National Food Security and Research (NFS&R) Rana Tanveer Hussain, along with senior officials from the Ministry of NFS&R and PASSCO, as per the President Secretariat Press Wing.

President Zardari underscored the significance of rural communities, highlighting that fair wheat pricing could bolster the rural economy, considering nearly 65% of Pakistan’s population resides in rural areas.

He stressed the importance of maintaining strategic food reserves to ensure food security and catering to future food demands.

Asif Ali Zardari proposed extending soft loans to the private sector for constructing silos and modern storage facilities, crucial for meeting the growing population’s food requirements.

Furthermore, he advocated for credible crop data to enable timely policy interventions and accurately forecast the country’s future food needs. Additionally, Zardari recommended deregulating the agriculture sector to foster growth and innovation.
