ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs, offering some relief to power consumers grappling with high utility bills.

According to a notification issued by NEPRA, electricity prices for DISCOs (distribution companies) have been slashed by PKR 0.49 per unit under the Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) for the month of May.

In a separate move, K-Electric consumers in Karachi will get a bigger cut of PKR 4.60 per unit, as part of the FCA for the month of April.

However, not all consumers will benefit from the price reduction. The statement clarified that the new rates will exclude lifeline consumers, prepaid meter users, and electric vehicle charging stations.

NEPRA’s decision is welcome news for many households and businesses, providing some relief amid ongoing economic challenges.

Officials explained that the adjustment is part of a routine monthly review, designed to pass on the benefits of lower fuel costs to the public.

This announcement comes after NEPRA’s decision last week to lower the national base power tariff by PKR 1.15 per unit.

Earlier in June, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched a mobile application that allowed power consumers to record and submit their meter readings themselves.

The government said the initiative will lead to more transparency in the system and reduce overbilling.

Last month, Pakistan had also decided to abolish the electricity duty in power bills from the month of July. Power Minister Awais Leghari had written letters to the chief executives of all provinces and informed them about the decision to discontinue the collection of electricity duty, according to the ministry.
