ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party- a major ally of the ruling alliance- Senator Sherry Rehman tabled a resolution during the Senate session on Thursday, praising the government for successfully hosting the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) 2024 Summit.
She said that the achievement was a joint effort between the Pakistan People’s Party and the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N).
The resolution, which received unanimous support from all political parties, stated, “The Senate of Pakistan congratulates the Government of Pakistan on holding an exceptionally successful event at the highest level of multilateral engagement in the form of the SCO Heads of Governments’ Conference in Islamabad.”
Rehman highlighted that the success of the conference signifies a turning point for Pakistan’s standing in the world. She expressed confidence that the progress made during the event would enhance Pakistan’s geo-economic profile and improve regional connectivity, investment, infrastructure, climate, and security goals.
Discussing the resolution, Sherry Rehman said that organizing such a significant event posed challenges for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, especially at a time when Pakistan needed to strengthen its foreign policy. She went on to say that hosting the SCO summit showcased Pakistan’s capability to conduct international events in a safe and secure environment.
Reflecting on earlier criticisms of Pakistan being isolated internationally, she remarked that the attendance of numerous delegations underscored global interest in investing in the country. Rehman urged the government to provide a report on the summit’s outcomes after three months to keep the public informed.
Moreover, ANP Leader Aimal Wali Khan praised the government for hosting the SCO 2024, stating that it would help portray a positive image of Pakistan globally.
He commended the excellent security and arrangements made for the dignitaries, affirming that the successful organization of the event demonstrates Pakistan’s capability to host major international gatherings.
