ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, has firmly stated that he has no intention to extend the tenure of the caretaker government. However, the authority to determine the date for the upcoming elections rests with the Election Commission of Pakistan.
In an interview with a private television channel, the prime minister highlighted that recent legislation has empowered the Election Commission to announce election dates.
Expressing his gratitude to Quaid-e-Azam for safeguarding the rights of the Muslim minority and securing an independent state for Muslims, he underscored the importance of protecting religious and cultural identities, especially in light of the challenges faced by minorities in larger states.
Prime Minister Kakar commended Quaid-e-Azam’s commitment to constitutionalism, inclusivity, and minority rights. He also affirmed the government’s commitment to cracking down on smuggling and establishing the state’s writ.
He noted the strong coordination between the caretaker federal and provincial governments, emphasizing the Special Investment Facilitation Council’s (SIFC) role in economic revival, with a focus on agriculture and mineral extraction sectors. The prime minister emphasized advancing major investment plans to ensure continuity when the new government assumes office.
Regarding Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan, Prime Minister Kakar stressed the importance of acknowledging that neighbors cannot be changed and highlighted ongoing discussions between both countries on trade, security, and regional connectivity.
Pakistan Forces Crackdown on Terrorists
Addressing the rise in terrorism incidents, he acknowledged terrorists’ enhanced capabilities but assured that Pakistan’s security forces would respond effectively and terrorists would not be allowed to take control of even an inch of territory. He reaffirmed the state’s unwavering stance against terrorism, emphasizing that violence would not be tolerated.
Restriction on PTI and Nawaz Return
Prime Minister Kakar clarified that there were no restrictions on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) participating in the elections. Regarding the May 9 incidents, he stated that those involved in vandalism and arson would face legal consequences, and Nawaz Sharif would be treated according to the law upon his return.
Pakistan Foreign Policy and Regional Relations
When it comes to foreign policy, he highlighted Pakistan’s positive relations with various countries, including its efforts to strengthen ties with Africa through the “Look Africa” policy.
Prime Minister Kakar emphasized Pakistan’s deep connection to Kashmir, calling it an integral part of the country’s collective memory. He also urged that sports, including cricket, should remain free from politicization.
