ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed that the E-Vehicles policy be finalized by November, following consultations with all federating units and stakeholders.
During a meeting in Islamabad, he emphasized the need for a comprehensive financial model and improved licensing regulations for the manufacturing of electric vehicles in Pakistan.
Prime Minister Sharif highlighted that promoting electric vehicles is a key priority for the government. He noted that these vehicles would help save valuable foreign exchange by reducing the import of petrol and diesel while also being environmentally friendly.
In addition, he announced a new initiative to provide E-motorbikes to outstanding students in government schools, modeled after the laptop distribution scheme.
The Prime Minister also instructed the Capital Development Authority to develop a detailed plan for electric-powered public transport in Islamabad.
The meeting revealed that since 2022, forty-nine licenses have been issued for the production of two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles locally, with twenty-five factories now in operation. The first license for domestic production of four-wheel electric vehicles was issued in September, and the first locally manufactured electric car is expected to hit the market by December.
Furthermore, it was reported that the establishment of recharging stations for electric vehicles will be prioritized.
