Pakistan’s PM Orders Crackdown on Electricity Theft, Vows Zero Tolerance

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday ordered the authorities concerned to minimise the ongoing loadshedding in various parts of the country amidst scorching temperatures. He emphasized efficient load management to alleviate public discomfort during the heatwave.

Asserting a stern stance against power theft, the Prime Minister vowed decisive action against perpetrators, ensuring the ongoing crackdown reaches its fruition. He pledged monthly review to gauge the progress of the anti-power theft drive, urging concerted efforts from provincial governments, law enforcement, and relevant agencies in the national interest.

Shehbaz Sharif underscored zero tolerance for unjust billing practices, directing expedited privatization of power distribution entities while leveraging expert input to advance the solarization of tube wells in Balochistan.

The briefing highlighted collaborative efforts between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and the federal power minister to mitigate load shedding, minimize losses, and enhance debt recovery in the province.

The meeting disclosed plans for dedicated task forces at provincial and divisional levels to combat power theft, subject to weekly performance evaluations.

Attended by federal ministers and relevant officials, the session also featured participation from provincial chief secretaries and police inspector generals via video conferencing.
