Pakistan’s PM Directs Legal Amendments for Judicial Reforms

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed the special committee concerned to formulate a package of legal and constitutional reforms to bring in judicial reforms in Pakistan.

The prime minister, chairing the first meeting of the special committee on legal and judicial reforms, also directed the committee to devise a strategy to simplify the civil and criminal laws for ease of the common man.

The committee comprises Law Minister Azam Nazeed Tarar, President of Supreme Court Bar Association Shehzad Shaukat, former Law Minister Zahid Hamid, senior legal expert Shahid Hamid, representative of Pakistan Bar Council Ahsan Bhoon, and Attorney General Mansoor Awan, according to PM Office press release.

PM Desires for Quick Judicial System

Expressing his desire to provide easy and quick justice to the common man, PM Shehbaz called for easing the taxation matters for the people, especially the business community.

He instructed the committee to put forward its legal proposals to ensure the effective recovery of taxes.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that pending tax recoveries worth 2400 billion rupees due to the court or tribunals’ orders were a matter of concern.

He also sought an interim report within two weeks on the tax and financial matters.

He instructed that the report to be presented by the committee should be forwarded to the relevant ministries for implementation, after consultation with the coalition partners.
