ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated that the security and protection of Pakistani citizens residing in Sudan is a top priority of the government amidst the ongoing political unrest in the country.
In a statement issued on Friday, PM Shehbaz Sharif stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation in Sudan and is consistently taking steps to ensure the security and safety of Pakistani nationals.
He further added that Pakistan’s embassy in Sudan is in constant touch with the 1500 Pakistanis living in Sudan and providing them with all possible facilities.
The embassy in Sudan has formed a WhatsApp group to remain in contact with Pakistanis who have been advised to stay at home for their safety. The Prime Minister acknowledged the challenges faced in evacuating Pakistani citizens from Sudan, as the roads leading to airports are not safe.
Pakistan in touch with friendly countries and UN
In this regard, the government is in touch with friendly countries and the United Nations for the security of Pakistanis and their early evacuation. PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed confidence that Sudanese authorities will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Pakistani citizens in the country.
Furthermore, on the instructions of the Prime Minister, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs has met with Sudan’s Ambassador in Pakistan and held a meeting with the Pakistani embassy in Sudan to discuss the current situation and to ensure the protection of Pakistani citizens.
The political turmoil in Sudan erupted following the military coup on April 11, which led to the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. This has led to a state of unrest and instability in the country, with reports of violence and human rights abuses.
The safety and security of foreign nationals, including Pakistanis, have become a major concern amidst this ongoing turmoil.
The government of Pakistan remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of its citizens in Sudan and will continue to take all necessary measures to guarantee their safety amidst the ongoing political unrest.
