ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s outgoing Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, addressed the nation on Sunday, reflecting on the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government’s tenure and affirming a constitutional transition of power as his administration concludes its 16-month term. Highlighting accomplishments and challenges faced during his tenure as the country’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the government’s commitment to responsible governance.

In his farewell address, Premier Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the difficulties encountered by the PDM-led government since assuming power in April 2022. Despite these challenges, the administration successfully navigated through tough decisions to avert a looming default threat and address critical issues facing the nation, the premier said.

As the nation’s chief executive, Shehbaz Sharif declared the conclusion of his government’s term and the transition of responsibility to a caretaker government. Notably, he referenced the government’s accession to power through constitutional means and underscored that its departure would be similarly constitutional.

Reflecting on the earlier ousting of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government through a parliamentary no-confidence vote, Shehbaz Sharif remarked, “We came to power through constitutional means.” This reference appeared to allude to the PDM’s ascension to power after the removal of PTI Chairman Imran Khan from office.

In the context of the upcoming interim government, PM Shehbaz congratulated Balochistan Awami Party Senator Anwaarul Haq Kakar, emphasizing his hope for a transparent and impartial electoral process under Kakar’s leadership.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to the nation and fellow political leaders for their trust and confidence in his administration. He also highlighted the government’s dedication to steering the country through challenging circumstances, including economic, political, and foreign policy crises.

PM Shehbaz Attributes Inflation to Previous PTI Government

Shehbaz Sharif credited his government with successfully navigating the nation away from the brink of default and destruction, acknowledging the challenging path they traversed. He specifically highlighted the economic stability achieved through a bailout loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

During his address, PM Shehbaz detailed the government’s achievements and outlined measures aimed at promoting progress and financial independence. He emphasized the government’s prioritization of national interests over political gains, noting that difficult decisions were made in the best interest of Pakistan’s future.

Attributing inflation to the previous PTI government, Shehbaz Sharif underscored his administration’s commitment to salvaging the nation from potential default. He expressed the belief that it was time to shift focus towards alleviating the struggles of the impoverished and underscored the importance of collective sacrifice for the betterment of the country.

Premier Shehbaz Sharif, in his address, also acknowledged the dedication and bravery of the armed forces in safeguarding the nation. As his government concluded its term, Sharif voiced hope for a prosperous and stable future for Pakistan.
