ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s thrilling 21-run victory (DLS method) against New Zealand in Bengaluru has kept their hopes alive in the ICC World Cup 2023, but the road to the semi-final is laden with challenges and uncertainties. While Pakistan managed to secure a crucial win, several factors and dependent outcomes will determine their fate in the tournament.
The Babar Azam-led team faces a must-win encounter against England on November 11 in Kolkata. However, Pakistan’s destiny may be shaped before that crucial match, as their qualification heavily relies on the results of two other teams – Afghanistan and New Zealand.
Afghanistan, currently standing at the cusp of qualification, faces formidable opponents in their remaining matches. They will play against Australia on November 7 and South Africa on November 10. If Afghanistan manages to win both matches, they will directly qualify for the semi-finals with 12 points, placing them above New Zealand and Pakistan in the standings.

As of now, Pakistan’s main contender is New Zealand, with both teams having one more match to play. However, the Black Caps hold the upper hand in net run rate (NRR). New Zealand will face Sri Lanka on November 9 in Bengaluru, a match that could significantly impact their NRR.
Pakistan’s Qualification Scenarios
If New Zealand beats Sri Lanka by 50 runs, Pakistan will need to defeat England by 180 runs.
If New Zealand wins by 1 run against Sri Lanka, Pakistan’s victory over England must be by 131 runs.
If Sri Lanka defeats New Zealand, a victory against England will secure Pakistan’s qualification.
It is crucial to note that these scenarios are applicable only if Afghanistan loses both of their remaining matches. India and South Africa have already secured their spots in the semi-final, and Australia, currently ranked third with 10 points, is likely to be the next team to advance. Australia’s remaining matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh will determine their final standings in the tournament.
