ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution addressing the growing concerns surrounding the misuse of social media platforms. The resolution urged the federal government to enhance the legal framework aimed at combating various online offences.
Lawmakers urged the implementation of stringent penalties for unauthorised video recording, cyber harassment, and digital defamation, emphasising the need for strong protections in the digital landscape.
The resolution, tabled by MNA Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, demanded that the federal government strengthen the country’s legal framework.
It called for strict punishments for unauthorised video recordings, cyber harassment, and the insidious practice of digital defamation.
“It’s time we recognise the dark side of social media,” Nosheen Iftikhar emphasised, highlighting the urgent necessity for comprehensive legislation to safeguard citizens’ rights in this digital age.
The resolution urged for enhanced resources, such as the establishment of specialised digital forensic units.
These units are envisioned to be swift and precise in their response to online threats, ensuring that those who exploit the anonymity of the internet face justice.
Moreover, the House proposed public awareness campaigns aimed at enlightening citizens about their digital rights, legal recourses, and the importance of safe reporting channels.
The resolution also called for the creation of dedicated complaint desks in police stations, making it easier for victims to seek help and support in times of need.
Recognising the crucial role of education in fostering a digitally conscious society, the House urged the introduction of education modules in schools.
These programmes would explore the realms of digital ethics, privacy rights, and anti-harassment laws, equipping the younger generation with the knowledge they need to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape responsibly.
