ISLAMABAD: With November and February being the high-risk season for diphtheria, Pakistan’s National Institute of Health (NIH)’s Center for Disease Control has issued an advisory. The health warning concerns the treatment and prevention of Corynebacterium Diphtheria, which causes the disease.

Last year, as many as 26 cases of diphtheria were confirmed by laboratory tests.

The statement issued by NIH directs professionals in the health sector to stay vigilant to be able to detect any case of Corynebacterium Diphtheria and carry out measures that control and prevent bacteria’s spread.

Toxin-producing bacterial strains cause diphtheria

The NIH advisory stressed diphtheria is a potentially life-threatening bacterial illness. Strains of Corynebacterium Diphtheria which are able to produce toxins result in the disease.

The disease’s mode of transmission is person-to-person via nasal droplets from sneezing or coughing.
