LAHORE: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for an independent investigation into violence and vandalism during recent protests in the country. Imran Khan was addressing through a video link from Lahore. This was his first address following his “arrest” from Islamabad and subsequent release. Imran Khan said that he was thankful to the country’s judiciary for saving him from “going to jail”. He added that he wanted an independent probe on the burning of state buildings and installations during protests.

The former Prime Minister added that he wanted that the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) to set up a panel under him for this purpose. He said that those who were escaping from the polls wanted to create political unrest and chaos in the country, not his party (PTI). Imran Khan accused the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif for attacking the country’s judiciary. He added that the PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif “destroyed the country’s judiciary”. Earlier, On May 11, the Supreme Court of Pakistan declared Imran Khan’s arrest as “illegal” and ordered to release him “immediately”.
It may be recalled that violent protest demonstrations erupted in several parts of the country soon following the PTI chief’s arrest. As many as 10 people were killed and many others injured during the days-long protest demonstrations with internet services also remaining suspended for more than 72 hours in the country.
