Pakistan’s Food Exports Decreased, Imports Increased in Five Months

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s food exports during the first five months of the current financial year (2022-23) decreased by about 1.03 percent, while the imports soared by 1.63 percent as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

From July to November, exports of different food goods were worth 1.927 billion dollars compared to 1.947 billion dollars in the corresponding period of last year. On the other side, food items worth 4.080 billion dollars were imported as against the imports of 4.015 billion dollars in the same period last year.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, during the same period, about 1.393 million metric tons of rice worth 749.404 million dollars was exported as compared to the exports of 1.585 metric tons worth 826.508 million dollars in the corresponding period of the last year.

Exports of fish commodities

Meanwhile, Pakistan exported about 71659 metric tons of fish commodities, valuing 185.922 million dollars as against the exports of 56731 metric tons worth 150.502 million dollars in the same period last year. While 34340 metric tons of meat products valuing 161.310 million dollars were exported as compared to the exports of 30877 metric tons worth 133.714 million dollars in the corresponding period last year.

On the other side, Pakistan’s food items imports, including cream, food, and cream for infants and milk, rose by 11.37%, and 17889 metric tons of such products valuing 64.155 million dollars were imported as compared to the same period of last year’s imports that were 17164 metric tons worth of 57.603 million dollars.

Pakistan spent 144.094 million dollars on soyabean oil imports and 1.334 billion dollars on palm oil imports, compared to imports of 43.095 million dollars and 1.527 billion dollars in the same period last year.
