Pakistan’s Ex-PM Announces not to Take Part in General Elections

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former prime minister and prominent leader of Pakistan Muslim League-N, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has announced that he will not take part in the next general elections.

He made the announcement during an exclusive interviewe with WE News on Saturday.

Abbasi added that he always pursued a political career based on principles without taking help from anyone.

Replying to a question he said that he had met PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif in London, but he didn’t hold any interaction with him after his return to Pakistan last month.

“I have no complaints or demands from anyone,” he said.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, said that he would not be part of the PML-N election campaign in the upcoming elections as he has no intention to contest election.

“I will welcome anyone who wants to contest the election from my constituency,” he said. He expressed sorrow over the current status of politics and said that the decision of the PML-N to become part of the federal government gave a new life to the opposition party.

Earlier, the President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Aziz Alvi, and Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan (SEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja agreed on declaring February 8 as the date for holding general elections in the country.

The meeting was held at the presidency on the orders of the Supreme Court. It was unanimously agreed during the meeting that elections would be held on February 8.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi replying to another question about Gilgit-Baltistan stressed the need for formulating new building laws like other parts of Pakistan. He added that strict laws must be introduced to stop the illegal construction in the northern region of Pakistan.

He said that during his tenure as prime minister he wanted to take many important decisions in this regard but failed to do so.
