ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former chief of army staff, General (retired) Qamar Javed Bajwa, has been hospitalised after sustaining injuries from a fall at his residence in Rawalpindi, the military’s media wing confirmed on Thursday.

The former army chief slipped barefoot in his home’s washroom around 4:30am on Tuesday, Bajwa’s brother-in-law, Naeem Ghummam, stated in a video statement posted on X.

The fall resulted in injuries to multiple parts of his body, including a head injury, Ghummam said.

He added that Bajwa has undergone several medical tests and is “100% out of danger,” with nothing serious detected in the medical examinations.

Following the accident, General (retired) Bajwa was moved to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Rawalpindi for urgent care.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, confirmed the incident, stating: “Former Chief of Army Staff General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military), sustained an injury after falling at his residence. He is currently under treatment at CMH.”

Family sources, cited by Business Recorder, said that Bajwa is being observed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors are closely monitoring his condition. Hospital officials have not released an official statement about updates on his health.

General (retired) Bajwa served as the 10th Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan from November 2016 until his retirement on November 29, 2022.

He was appointed by then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and received a three-year extension from former Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2019.

Before his tenure as Chief of Army Staff, Bajwa held key positions within the Pakistan Army, including Inspector General of Training and Evaluation at the General Headquarters (GHQ) and staff roles in the 10 Corps as a lieutenant colonel.

He also commanded a United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a brigade commander and served as Commandant of the Infantry School in Quetta.

Bajwa hails from the infantry’s Baloch Regiment, which has produced three previous army chiefs: Generals Yahya Khan, Mirza Aslam Beg, and Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. He is a recipient of Pakistan’s prestigious Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) award.

Family sources have emphasised that Bajwa’s condition is stable and that he is receiving all necessary medical attention.

Ghummam described the fall as an accident and reassured the public that Bajwa is “out of danger.”
