ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar responded on Wednesday to President Arif Alvi’s letter to the Chief Election Commissioner regarding the election date, emphasizing that the primary responsibility for determining the election date rested with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Earlier today, President Dr. Arif Alvi sent a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja proposing that elections be held by November 6. However, the Prime Minister reiterated that the “prime mandate” for setting the election date lies with the ECP.
Talking to a private news channel, the premier said that President Arif Alvi has proposed a date, and it is the responsibility of the Electoral body to conduct the necessary deliberations to ensure the conditions for free and fair polls. Kakar expressed confidence that the Election Commission would soon announce the date after reaching a conclusion on the most suitable day for the elections,
He added that realistically, if the delimitation process progressed smoothly, the election date could be chosen anywhere between the middle and the end of January.
ECP Respond to President Election Date
Meanwhile, the ECP has also reacted to President Arif Alvi’s letter, saying the body will respond after analyzing the content of the letter. According to media reports quoting the ECP, the electoral body has the constitutional right to announce the election date, which will be made known after the completion of the delimitation process on November 30.
It is worth noting that earlier today, President Arif Alvi suggested November 6, 2023, for the general elections in a letter to the ECP.
