BEIJING: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arrived in Beijing on Monday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, scheduled to be held in Tianjin on Tuesday.

The Deputy Prime Minister was received at the airport by Ambassador Yu Hong, Department of Asian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalil ur Rehman Hashmi, and senior officials from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his official visit, Ishaq Dar will lead Pakistan’s delegation to the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Tianjin tomorrow, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

The Deputy PM will also hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping along with other SCO Foreign Ministers. He will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from SCO member states, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The SCO is a 10-nation Eurasian security and political grouping whose members include China, Russia, Pakistan, India, and Iran.

Their foreign ministers’ meeting was held as a precursor to the annual summit of its leaders set for the autumn.

According to the report, the top diplomats from Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan will also attend the summit.

“The upcoming Council of Heads of State will take place on August 31 and September 1 in Tianjin, China,” Pakistan’s Foreign Office stated on Sunday.

The CFM is the third-highest forum in the SCO format. It focuses on the issues of international relations, as well as the foreign and security policies of the organisation, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said.

The forum approves the documents, including declarations and statements that are to be presented for the consideration of the Council of Heads of State (CHS), as well as the decisions to be adopted by the CHS.
